CES 2010: EgisTec Introduces Fingerprint Scanners For Everybody
At the CES (Consumer Electrics Show) in Las Vegas, security specialist EgisTec unveiled two new systems that will enable fingerprint “biometric identification” in more and more lifestyle net-books and smart-phones.

Taipei, Taiwan / Munich, Jan 15 , 2010 The classical way to access electronic devices and services is a combination of a username and a password. That works as long as you only use a handful of systems. But with the boom of portable technology and the variety of web 2.0 services, the number of passwords a user has to memorise is growing rapidly.

The remedy is a biometric sensor system that identifies a user with the help of bodily characteristics. The individual fingerprint has a long history: As early as 246 AD, Chinese dignitaries authenticated their official clay seals with their fingerprints. Of course, modern fingerprint scanners work significantly better and faster: Just swipe your finger across the image sensor – only then will the device grant you access.

At the CES (Consumer Electrics Show) in Las Vegas, security and biometrics specialist EgisTec unveiled two new products from this particular product range:

The EgisTec ES603-AF, the world’s first All-Flat Design fingerprint sensor enables new designs in trendy, handheld devices like portable mini-PCs and design- smart-phones, and has improved intuitive operation.
The BioExcess, the world's first fingerprint scanner security solution that supports Pre-Boot Authentication (PBA), based on Microsoft's Windows Biometric Framework (WBF), and as in Windows 7

For design devices: the world’s first All-Flat Design fingerprint sensor
With the EgisTec ES603-AF, EgisTec introduces a new fingerprint sensor package that will entice new consumer groups with its design. Traditional sensor packages take up a lot of space and have to be built into the case, which compromises the design and can also lead to operation failures.

The new module in All-Flat Design allows the sensor to fit seamlessly into the casing so that it is almost nothing more than a line on the case (12mmx1.8mm). Usability tests at EgisTec show that with this design, users can handle the sensor intuitively better than built-in sensors. At the same time, the thinness (from 0.5mm to1.8mm) allows for easy integration of the 192 pixel sensor in small net-books, CULV-systems, ultra-micro PCs, smart-phones and other portable devices.

The haptic feel is smooth and flawless and this fits perfectly into the next generation of portable consumer electronics.

"Living with the internet is becoming a lifestyle", says Steve Ro, CEO of EgisTec, who explains, "EgisTec provides manufacturers of portable devices with the possibility to create more security for their users with the help of biometrics, while thoroughly enhancing the comfort, design and style of the devices."

Digital guards: BioExcess
Also new: The EgisTec BioExcess Software. It allows you to log on to your computer simply by using your fingerprint – no more typing in your password after booting. BioExcess is the world’s first biometric access solution that supports Pre-Boot Authentication based on Microsoft’s Windows Biometric Framework (WBF). With Pre-Boot Authentication, the verification takes place after starting BIOS and prior to the Windows log-on, thus adding even more security to the log-in process.

Moreover, EgisTec BioExcess stores the user's browser passwords and so allows access to popular websites like Webmail, Facebook or Twitter with one swipe of the finger – constantly entering passwords is a thing of the past. Access to the highly-secure EgisTec Yo-Safe software – a hidden and encrypted virtual disc – is possible with just a fingerprint as well. And it is even possible to allocate fingers to certain applications – the left index finger boots the browser, the right little finger opens Word, etc.
