What Is Lost Is Not Quite Gone
A strategy for data loss prevention describes measures that prevent data loss for businesses. Even small businesses, the self-employed and private users, can achieve this – with the new products from security expert EgisTec.

Taipei, Taiwan / Munich, Feb 22, 2010 - Laptops are private, and so are corporate secrets. Computer users save private party pictures along with video clips of the baby's first splashes in the bath. Employees at small and medium-sized businesses save offering letters as well as cost estimates in the "Documents" folder. Self-employed people save almost "everything" - from account ledgers to passwords for online banking.

A stolen laptop is enough for private, confidential or just personal data to land in the hands of computer criminals. A device is lost every 53 seconds - not all are stolen, several are simply lost. The problem remains; half of these laptops contain confidential data. Laptops need protection - with the new tools for data loss prevention from security experts EgisTec.

Data loss prevention: how to prevent data leaks in 4 steps
With its head office in Taiwan, one of the leading IT industry centres in the world, the EgisTec controls, among other things, data access as the renowned manufacturer of finger print scanner technology that is installed in several mobile end devices like laptops, mini PCs and smartphones. With various Windows products, EgisTec additionally supports a strategy for data loss prevention aimed at private users and the self-employed as well as small and medium-sized businesses.

Step 1: Removing data at each access
The cryptographic suite EgisTec MyWinLocker 3 encrypts individual files and entire folders using known and proven cryptographic methods (AES). Alternatively, all password protected data is stored on the virtual disk "Yo-Safe". These can be hidden, so that not only are laptop thieves unable to access the data - any private data goes totally unnoticed.

EgisTec MyWinLocker 3 runs on several Windows versions up to Windows 7 and is available for $39.95.

Step 2: Deleting data that has leaked
Data deleted using Windows' standard tools can be restored with the help of online hacker tools. Thus, secret information can slip through a company's protective barrier, as old computers and hard disks are disposed of too carelessly. The wipe utility EgisTec Shredder renders such data irretrievable and therefore prevents such classic loopholes.

EgisTec Shredder runs on several Windows versions up to Windows 7 and is available for $14.95.

Step 3: Destroying leaked data
If the laptop is lost, it's usually too late - the data is already in foreign hands. It's alright if it's at least protected and hidden with MyWinLocker 3, for example. However, the new remote deletion system EgisTec Trust Delete goes one step further. With this service, the owner is able to "remote delete" data from the laptop. If the thief goes online with the stolen device, the software checks if the data - encrypted and hidden with Trust Delete - can be rendered unreadable and destroyed, using the built-in Shredder technology.

EgisTec Trust Delete runs on several Windows versions up to Windows 7 and is available for $29.95.

Step 4: Preventing data leaks
Encryption is of little help if the user carries data around by connecting USB sticks to PCs or laptops. This is a serious security issue, especially in business environments. Here, too, EgisTec provides a solution; the new control software EgisTec Port Locker prevents corporate data leaks via USB sticks as well as printers and network interfaces.

EgisTec Port Locker will be released soon. EgisTec will announce the details of Port Locker in a separate press release.

Customers can obtain all EgisTec products from the online shop at www.egistec.com/en/store/.

Those interested can find a fully functional 60-day trial version of MyWinLocker 3 and a fully functional 30-day trial version of EgisTec Shredder in the download section.
