Egis Wins the First Case of AI on Chip Project Subsidized by the Executive Yuan

Taipei, Taiwan – Jan 06, 2020The AI on chip project led by Egis Technology Inc. (6462. TWO) was approved by the Ministry of Economic Affairs in December of last year and received a subsidy of NT $200 million. This is the first case of the AI on chip project of the Executive Yuan since its establishment and is expected to create more than an output value of NT $10 billion.

In recent years, the semiconductor industry has heavily adopted the AI (Artificial Intelligence) trend. Resolving to not fall behind the trend, Egis started preparing for the AI on chip project since 2Q19. This project is led by Egis and implemented jointly with eMemory Technoogy Inc. Egis uses analog AI circuit design and self-learning through a large number of AI fingerprint libraries. Even in the case of poor fingerprint imaging quality, it can still effectively identify feature points, enhance the fingerprint recognition rate (FRR), and create low cost, low power consumption and high efficiency products with strong anti-counterfeiting capabilities. This type of AI technology is expected to be widely used in mobile device identification systems, automotive DMS and autonomous driving, safety monitoring, security systems, and IoT (Internet of Things) to create more and more effective new AI applications.

Egis cooperates with the development goals of the AITA (AI on Chip Taiwan Alliance) with the Executive Yuan, and expects this case will become the best practice case of the AI on chip project by developing the world’s first optical fingerprint sensor based on reconfigurable analog AI computing technology. The large-area optical fingerprint identification chip aims to achieve world-class performance of 5TOPS / W (0.25TOPS / 0.05W) and continuously develop advanced technologies and products.

Egis Technology Inc. is committed to the design and development of fingerprint sensor ICs for smartphone applications, whether it is capacitive or under-display fingerprint sensors. With products and customers all over the world, Egis is the second largest global supplier for fingerprint sensor shipments. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) and Nordea Swedish Investment Bank’s industry analysis reports, it is estimated that the optical fingerprint sensor penetration rate of smartphones and under-display fingerprint sensors shipments will continue to grow to the year 2024. Therefore, fingerprint sensor products with low-cost and high-recognition is still a key feature and trend of smartphone applications in the market.

With Egis actively participating in the AI on chip alliance and receiving the first grant, it has resulted in the successful establishment of the company’s advanced technology research and development standards along with further reestablishing Egis’ global competitiveness in the semiconductor and panel ecosystem.
